The Princely Family

The Princely House has its origins in Lower Austria and purchased the County of Vaduz in 1699 and the lands of Schellenberg in 1712.

In 1719 these two territories were united and awarded the status of Principality. The current head of state of Liechtenstein is Prince Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein, who was married to Marie Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau  († 21st August 2021) in 1967. They have four children, of whom the oldest - Hereditary Prince Alois - was named Representative in 2004. Hereditary Prince Alois is married to Princess Sophie of Bavaria, with whom he has four children. As the oldest son, Joseph Wenzel Maximilian Maria is next in line to the throne. The order of succession to the throne is determined by regulations known as House Laws.
