The municipalities

Liechtenstein is formed of eleven municipalities, six of which are in the Oberland (south).

Starting in the south and moving north, the eleven municipalities are Balzers, Triesen, Triesenberg, Vaduz, Schaan and Planken (Oberland); and Eschen/Nendeln, Mauren/Schaanwald, Gamprin/Bendern, Schellenberg and Ruggell (Unterland).

These eleven municipalities are home to approximately 38,000 inhabitants. Each municipality has its own administration and is headed by a mayor and a number of members of the regional council. Citizens also have the right of initiative and right of referendum at municipal level.
