Students Otilia and Gabita share a room in a dormitory in a small town in Romania. The communist regime under Ceausescu is on its last legs. Everyday life is a new challenge for people every day, and even renting a room in a hotel is a difficult undertaking. In a hotel room, the two friends are expecting a certain Mr. Bebe. Gabita is pregnant, abortion is illegal in Romania - and the young women, who have no idea what to do in such a situation, slide into a fiasco.
