Liechtenstein in 48 hours
A journey through the country

Start in Malbun

Discover an entire country in 48 hours? That's easily possible in Liechtenstein. Of course, there won't be enough time for everything, but we can guarantee some lasting experiences.

Why not start "at the top" and immerse yourself in our mountain world past Vaduz Castle? If you take the chairlift to Sareis in Malbun, you can enjoy the mountain panorama from the Sareiserjoch viewpoint. If you like being active, you can also take the explorer's trail from the Schluchertreff in the direction of Sass Seelein. After a short rest, you can return or perhaps even continue on to Schönberg (time required: 2-4 hours)?

You are welcome to stay a while longer in Malbun. Be it to admire the majestic birds of prey flight show (time required: 45 min), to solve the puzzles of the magical Malbun portal or to complete the 2.5 km long 3D archery course with life-size animal figures (time required: approx. 90 min each). Afterwards, it's worth stopping off at one of the mountain restaurants.

On the return to the valley, you pass Steg. Here we recommend a digestive walk along the Gänglesee lake to Alpe Valüna. A place of peace and relaxation and a lovely excursion destination for families and nature lovers (time required: approx. 45 min).

Discover Vaduz

In Vaduz, you can take the CityTrain. It takes visitors through historic Old Vaduz, past the Vaduz vineyards, to make a photo stop below the famous Red House with a panoramic view of Vaduz Castle.

The tour then continues through the marvellous countryside around Vaduz. During the tour, you will learn the most important facts about the country, the Princely House, history and current events. The route back to the centre of Vaduz takes you past Liechtenstein's stadium, the Rheinparkstadium (time required: 35 minutes).

Now it's worth continuing on foot and strolling through the town centre, past shops and cafés, the sculpture park and the museum mile towards Peter-Kaiser-Platz, where the parliament and government buildings are located.

Which museum looked particularly tempting? The LandesMuseum, PostMuseum, SchatzKammer, Kunstraum Engländerbau and Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein with the Hilti Art Foundation are all worth a visit. They all have a lot to offer for those interested in culture and history.

Time for dinner. There are numerous excellent restaurants in Liechtenstein. The same applies to accommodation, of course.

Liechtenstein "Unterland"

The next day we continue with a detour into the "Unterland". Why not enjoy the morning freshness in the Ruggeller Riet? The approximately 90-hectare nature reserve in the north of Liechtenstein offers nature lovers a wonderful experience. The Siberian iris blooms at the end of May and numerous other plants and animals, such as the stork, have found an ideal habitat here.

Fancy a bit of history? There are many historically interesting places in the Liechtenstein lowlands. For example, the castle ruins in Schellenberg, the Eschner Pfrundbauten (benefice buildings) or the Roman estate in Nendeln, to name just a few.

For your lunch break, we recommend stopping off at one of the traditional restaurants. How about a portion of cheese dumplings?

The best way to round off the afternoon is at Grossabünt. The large leisure complex with bathing lake in the centre has something for everyone. Whether relaxing or swimming in the lake, a walk around the complex or some sporting activity - active people, families and pleasure-seekers alike meet here.

Alternatively, you could drive back to the Oberland and walk up to Gutenberg Castle in Balzers, whose outer courtyard, unlike Vaduz Castle, can also be visited (castle chapel with rose garden only during the season).

More than 48 hours to spare? Then we have the following recommendations:

Adventures in Liechtenstein

  • Hike to the Pfälzerhütte

The Pfälzerhütte is a mountain hut at an altitude of 2108 metres and is located at the top of the Naaftal valley on the border with Austria.

It can be reached from Sareis via the Fürstin-Gina trail. From there, you follow the ridge between the Malbun valley and the Nenzinger Himmel to the summit cross on the Augstenberg and the Pfälzerhütte on the Bettlerjoch with breathtaking views.

    Route length: 12 kilometres
    Ascent/descent: 892 metres
    Time required: 5 hours

  • Liechtenstein Trail

Discover an entire country in one journey? You can do this on the Liechtenstein Trail, which you can explore on foot or by (e-)bike.

  • Family holidays in Malbun

Welcome to Malbun! The idyllic family paradise, which has been awarded the "Family Destination" seal of quality multiple times, has a lot to offer not only for outdoor fans, but also for families.

  • Hike to the Gafadura hut

This tour takes you from lively Schaan to the remote idyll of Alp Gafadura. At the foot of the imposing Three Sisters massif, the tarmac road leads to the mountain village of Planken, which is located on a mountain terrace around 800 metres above sea level. After passing the last houses, the route branches off into the forest and leads along a natural road with a steady ascent to the pastures of Alp Gafadura. At your destination, the Gafadura hut, which is open from the end of April to October, invites you to linger before tackling the way back.

  • Views from the Fürstensteig

If there is one place in Liechtenstein that particularly embodies the promise of "Princely Moments", it is the Fürstensteig. Powerful, mighty, mystical. After the third bend, you come across an extraordinary rock formation that combines the power and strength of this unique nature. Good to know: This trail is not for people with a fear of heights, who are neither sure-footed nor free from giddiness.
