Special customs on official holidays
Alongside the many customs practised on Catholic holidays and other important religious occasions, a number of further traditions such as Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day are now well-established in Liechtenstein.
Valentine's Day on 14th February is celebrated only by a very small number of people in Liechtenstein, but in recent years it has featured prominently in the media. As a result, the idea of a man giving a bunch of flowers to his sweetheart on this particular day is now becoming more and more of a tradition.
Mother's Day and Father's Day are an opportunity for children to give their parents something they have made themselves. Traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother's Day has become increasingly secular in recent years through the influence of an annual concert of harmoniemusik held after High Mass. On Mother's Day many families gather in restaurants to share a meal.
In Schaan and Triesenberg a special blessed bread is sold (given to children free) on the Feast of Corpus Christi. In Triesenberg this is a sweet bread containing grapes.
